Solstice Parade 2008

As part two of Helena's 1st Birthday Weekend, we took Helena and Gramma Becky to the Solstice Parade.

Every year during the Solstice, at The Center of the Universe (the Fremont Neighborhood), a funny thing happens. They throw a parade! And not just any run of the mill parade. You won't find politicians waving from the back seat of a Cadillac, or a parade queen propped up on a motorized float - oh, no. What you will see is a bunch of people celebrating the Longest Day of the Year the best way they know how -- with themselves. Anyone can sign up to be in the parade so long as you create your own float, don't use any kind of motorized vehicle, and be INTERESTING. Some of the things seen in the parade this year: Capoeira dancers; a gigantic bed on wheels with kids dressed as monkeys jumping up and down ("No more monkeys jumping on the bed!"); a group of people giving out hugs; brass, samba, prog-rock, and new-wave bands; lots of interesting bicycles; and many, many others. Oh, and waaay too many naked people.
